Terrorism-expert Jessica Stern wonders why some humiliated people become a terrorist and why others don’t.
Perhaps some understanding can be found in the notion of self-esteem. The psychiatrist Bruno Bettelheim has made a study of the prisoners in concentration camps in WW II who survived and who did not. Those who managed to keep self-confidence had the best chance to stay alive. Perhaps terrorists are people with few self-esteem and self-confidence.
